On a scale of 1-10, how much do you care about the story in a game?

"Story" serves the same purpose in videogames that it does in porn. It's just there to provide an excuse, and then mostly just gets in the way of the action after that.

"So... I hear you're having problems with you pipes! Let me get out my tool" and "Big-eyed teenagers save the world" are functionally identical. Stopping to show a hairy guy fix a sink and stopping to show those big-eyed teenagers on an awkward "date" of sorts are also functionally identical.

You haven't played a lot of video games if you believe that absolutely none of them have stories that aren't just framing devices.

1. Games like Mother 3, Knights of the Old Republic and the Last of Us shouldn't even exist.

5.

Some genres require it, some it's not even needed.
Pretty much this.

I don't think I could get that into an RPG without a story at all (but it still needs a good battle system, not JUST a good story) but I honestly couldn't care at all if the next Mario platformer had literally no story whatsoever.

I mean, honestly, as far as that type of thing, the story adds almost literally nothing. I think I would actually be HAPPY if the next Mario platformer didn't have a story. It's kind of annoying to have to sit through that rather pointless cutscene each time I start a new file with friends on NSMBU.

Accepting crap stories is why you accept crap games

10 but I don't expect a 10 story and don't expect a worthwhile story where it shouldn't be.

As others said depends on the genre
Platformers, side scrolling beat em ups, and 3d shooters almost no story is needed. So I'd say a 2 as the best ones you can write the entire plot on the back of a cocktail napkin
Look at early Nintendo games story usually girl gets captured guy goes plowing through countless enemies to get her back. Think original Metroid was the only one that didn't follow that plot that I can think of.

RPG's it can go either way. You are roleplaying a story, but there are so many different ways to tell the story. Old RPG's had a story that was told via where you went, and the NPC's you talked to. Modern ones seem to cut a bit of that out, and just went for movies instead.
Now a RPG without a story I don't see how it would work as there would be nothing driving you to do anything. It would basically just be a grinding game from the 1st level till you can beat the boss with no objectives inbetween. so I'd say a 9

Sports, and puzzle games are pretty much the only genre's I can say don't need any story what so ever.

Elder scrolls, is an example of Action RPG which do not take its story seriously. heck players will also will not care for the story as only gameplay is important.

have you ever see in a developer review they discuss the story section extensively?

FPS or mario kart - 0, I'm playing it for multiplayer

WRPG, Sandbox - 2, not super important, mostly playing for gameplay.

Survival Horror - 10, a dark story can comement the atmosphere very well to create a masterpiece game (e.g. Silent Hill 2)

Visual Novel - 10, for obvious reasons!

Those are the genres of games I typically play, not counting a few retro titles.
