This, and it was rumored that Nintendo wanted to get another Banjo game (or to buy some IP's back from Rare) but Microsoft refused that as well.

The only reason I'd want Nintendo to buy back Rare is to get Diddy Kong Racing on VC.

Why?
Rare has been a zombie since the Stamper Bros left.

Yeah they should buy Rare, primarily to allow Nintendo to absorb Rare's IP's into their first party lineup. Imagine Smash Bros. 5 introducing Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Conker, Jet Force Gemini, and Battletoads. That would be an amazing injection of interesting game franchises which in turn could produce interest in new games from those franchises. I couldn't care less about Rare's developers these days, but their IPs are certainly worth having.

Hell yea Killer Instinct is the most amazing IP ever. I almost bought a XB1 today cause of it but I just couldn't do it even though I like KI so much.

They don't need Microsoft's permission for that. Despite many of the characters in that game being owned by Rare, the title character is owned by Nintendo.

They also remade the game for the Nintendo DS, but it was terrible.

No. Rare is, and always has been, worthless.

I'm not sure if Nintendo would be able to replace Banjo and Conker in the original game with other characters.

I feel like they should, just to buy the ips and replace the staff with people of actual talent.
