Is this possible? Should I bother ?

I was thinking of getting a handful of Wii games for my WiiU but I remembered Nintendo did something that made Wii no longer unable to play GameCube games. Could that ideally happen in the future?

They just changed the models of the Wii. Old ones could still play them. If you get a Wii U that can play Wii games, you'll always be able to play.

No plans for a new model of Wii U so far. So if you got the current model, then you don't have to worry at all.
