These numbers are Japan only as you keep pointing out..approximately 10% of world sales

And yet 4 of the most highly anticipated PS4 titles in North America (Final Fantasy 15, Kingdom Hearts 3, Metal Gear Solid 5, and Bloodborne) are all being made in Japan. Anyone claiming Japan is in some way irrelevant to the world market is kidding themselves. Despite their low population they still produce a significant portion of all games, and the system that sells the best in Japan will get Japanese game support.

Anyway, are we talking about for a single week, or period? For a single week, sure, I expect them to lead the market when FF15 comes out for at least a month. Overall? Not if they keep tracking at 20% under Wii U every week, that gap will quickly become insurmountable.

The Wii U isn't getting the three multiplatform titles you mentioned.

I think the PS4 will ultimately do best this generation. (if you're not counting PCs, because that's not fair)
I think Wii U will take somewhere in second.
I think Xbox One will be deadlast. Dragging its sorry *** behind it.

At the time they FF15 and KH3 were announced it was believed that PS4 would handily beat Wii U in Japan. Since then it has become clear that this is not the case. If Wii U proves itself to be number one you'll see it getting most of the future announcements. It's also worth noting that PS4 already lost exclusivity on FF15 and KH3, it's not a stretch to think we might see them ported to other platforms too if PS4 is still struggling in Japan. Square has to make their money back somehow, and it's obviously not going to be on XBox One.

The same thing happened with Wii in Japan. While it was on top, it got major announcements, like DQX and Tales of Graces. It eventually lost the #1 spot so the games started going to PS3. That just highlights why that market is important.

Japan is always relevant at least in the production side of things. They just arent very relevant on the consumption side since Japanese in general tend to be more frugal.

If it wasn't for Japan, Nintendo would've gone bankrupt with the N64.

If it wasn't for the rest of the world, Sony would be bankrupt.

The answer is still yes, but even if the answer was no, it wouldn't actually matter.

They won't buy the PS4 until that first killer app, then it will fly out the stores.

Then fanboys here will cry.

Just like how Wii U flew out of stores when Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 came out.

It's been shown time and time again that one game can't do it on its own. It takes a stream of them. PS4's launch wasn't terrible for Japan, it had Yakuza and Dynasty Warriors, the problem was they didn't have much for Japan after that. It took PS3 like 5 years to finally start getting a steady stream of content and that's when it's sales finally started to take off.

Incidentally, for all Sony fans saying Japan doesn't matter, XBox 360 would have handily crushed PS3 without Japan. It was the influx of exclusive Japanese titles that finally started to turn the tide.
