Why can't Nintendo do something like this? It's so simple and it would dramatically boost the sales of the Wii U without instantly removing the option with the bigger gamepad/screen.

The WiiU has been out for less than two years. It's safe to say it will be at least a little while longer before any kind of redesign. Do try to be more patient.

Reducing hardware component size usually means it'll cost more.

Not always, the bigger screens on the 3DSXL is the reason it costs more. Also, the main reason the PS3 drastically reduced its price was thanks to the cell being shrunk down.

Not always, but usually, and later PS3s removed PS2 hardware.

This. It usually takes 4 years or more for Nintendo to do a redesign of their home console. ~2 years may be standard for Sony/MS but not for Nintendo.

Because they would lose at least 50 bucks on each console sold. Is that reason good enough?
