Good External Hard Drive for Wii U?

#1akl1515Posted 7/31/2014 3:35:33 PM
I was considering getting an External Hard Drive because mario kart 8 and wind waker took up a chunk of space and I assume im gonna need a lot more memory later on with all the new games coming out. I'm having trouble because nintendo reccomends one with external power and almost all of them draw power through the USB port. Ive also heard that a lot of people are getting issues with their hard drives not working with the Wii U.

Anyone have a hard drive that's reliable and relatively inexpensive? I'm only looking for 500GB - 1TB because that's more than I think I could use since I'm not going full digital.

External Harddrives that use their own power cord are typically made to be possibly-always-on drives that sit on your desk. As such it's actually really hard to find one like that with less than 1TB of space.

Reliable depends on the year, really. At the moment, I'm pretty sure Western Digital is the popular choice with Seagate going down in quality ever since that big tsunami hitting their factories in Thailand. Don't even remember the last time I saw an Iomega on sale, so that tsunami pretty much changed the market.

The issues are probably because they didn't format correctly, but I can't be sure.

I say any hard drive is fine,if you're worried, zero the entire drive to see if there are any bad sectors. And if you're really paranoid, try copying a bunch of random stuff to fill the drive and see if performance takes a hit. If it passes both, then you're fine.

I'm also in the market for one. This one plugs into the wall, thus only uses one usb port, correct?

Was it Seagate or WD (or someone else) who has problems with drive spindown on WiiU?

no idea, but my seagate, it's fine runs perfectly in the wii u and is silent just like the wii u, sometimes you won't noticed if the drive it's on, lol
