How would you respond to the "Nintendo only makes games for kids" argument?

im sorry but regardless of if you feel nintendo is "kiddie" or not.

using pokemon metagame is not any kind of proof that it isnt kiddie.

thats like someone saying "cartoon network isnt for kids because they have adult swim".

Adult Swim is actually its own separate network, it just shares Cartoon Network'schannel.

thats what im saying, cartoon network is the name of the channel, a channel thats typically for kids, but at night, that same cartoon network channel for kids airs shows that arent meant for kids

People talking about the Pokemon metagame are saying that its another instance of "easy to learn, hard to master" that Nintendo games usually have. They're usually easy for anyone to pick up and play, but to actually do well?

Nintendo makes very simple games.

Simple games are mostly played by kids and elders

Because everything else either holds your hand or plays the game for you.

So you are in fact admitting Nintendo games are simple and mostly played by kids and elders.

LOL

Nothing wrong with simple. At least you get to play them without interference.

If simple is what you can handle then by all means.

there is no requirement to master anything. the games can be beaten without caring at all about mastering it. if anyone can pick up a game and play it, and beat it, thats all thats required, not knowing the inner working and breaking down everything into a much more complicated matter, still doesnt change its a game that can easily be beaten.

how many other nintendo games are just as advanced? again even if we say ok the pokemon game counts as somehow "too advanced", naming one game in a library doesnt disprove the nintendo is geared to kids theory.

You mean you can't even handle simple? I know I can, and more.

That argument can be applied to anytihng then. Chess, poker/texas hold em, Risk.
#96king_maddenPosted 8/16/2014 12:48:21 PM
those games poker/texas often require some form of luck.

but in the other games, unless you are playing a child or dumbed down AI you arent going to win. nintendo games tend to mostly be against AI that isnt very difficult, and they mask that with level design (in mario games).

like your pokemon argument is against what? other highly skilled people? the game pokemon itself doesnt require any of that.

IF you play against amateurs sure, its like 90% luck 10% skill, but people who actually know what they're doing? its like 90% skill 10% luck.
They don't "mask" it with level design, the level is the main aspect of the game. The AI is there simply so you don't break the game by just running through everything. The enemies aren't the hard part, its the actual level.
That's still majority of games though. The reason most of their games are easy at first, then get absurdly hard after is because there's no difficulty settings.

but again a game that any one can pick up and easily play and beat, is different than trying to talk about "oh there are people who play pokemon to the extreme and thats why its not true".

the games tend to be colorful, cute, simple, and silly. all things that are used to cater to children. look at kids shows, they often look like nintendo main games. not saying theres anything wrong with it, because adults CAN enjoy it too. Nintendo themselves market it as a console for children, with kids asking parents to get one, in most of their commercials.
