Well it was weird, I came at him at a slightly different angle (my bow shooting wasn't any better, I suck) but instead of charging me, he'd run off a little ways. So I was able to keep shooting until I got him. It almost felt like cheating since he didn't charge me.

It seems like if you are "undetected", predators will just run away instead of charge at you.

The knife can be used in all Path of the Hunter quests. It's to give you an out if you run out of ammo. It's also a hell of a lot easier to use than the bow.
Try it if you are unconvinced.
So they mislead you into telling you it has to be killed with a bow ?

I'm sure it says somewhere (handbook, one of those popups) that you must use "the listed weapon or your knife". It's just not constantly reminded so people tend to forget.
