Yeah get more "bang for you buck", but enjoy your time wasting simulator. Linear games have better production values, graphics and more focused story. They are better unless you are just look for the cheapest way to spend your money....hence the repetitive side missions like capturing towers to open the map(stolen from AC) and hunting animals.
I like open world games because they let you stop and smell the roses, so to speak. They may be less visually consistent in general, but I often find them to be quite beautiful in comparison to their linear counterparts. Red Dead Redemption and Far Cry 2 (I think it looked better than 3) are two of the loveliest looking games I've ever played.
