So I bought my copy used at my local gamestop the other day only to realize the code has already been used. Is there any other way I can get a code for free. I googled it and it brought me to some shady site that requires me to do a survey of sorts. Other options or am I just SoL?

Check under extras when you hit the "x" button over the game tile in the home screen.

Other options? Well, if you're in the U.S. you could join Bing Rewards, do a bunch of searches each day, and eventually you can redeem Bing Points for 800 Microsoft Points.

You gotta pay the extra $10 to buy the online pass. Seems fair to me, since you got it for cheaper (I think it's around $45 used now?)
