You do the business in a bush near and outpost and the smell forces the pirates to move away from their location so you can sneak around easier.

However it will also attract all predators in the area making it harder.

It would also make the game more realistic.

You'd have to eat something quite foul to be able to smell it in a jungle. But mostly... no thanks.

As an avid hiker I can tell you that if someone takes a duece near a trail and doesn't bury it not only can you smell it but it is indeed distracting!

Ultimate survival. Eat drink poop and pee.

Now that you said this, they themselves probably often do their business in the trees and bushes around the outposts. Considering there aren't any toilets in their bases, it should be Jason stepping in it and giving himself away. Or if he happens to fall 4 feet off a rock he might 'crash land' into it and it would obstruct the camera until prompted to wipe it off.
