I know I need Redstone, but when I placed it next to a powered rail nothing happens. When my railcar hits it, it just stops. What am I missing?

You need a source of power, use a Redstone Torch :) place it under the block the Powered Rail is on.

Either use the redstone to connect a switch or button to it, or combine the redstone and a stick to create a redstone torch and place that next to the powered rail. --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D51qi-ogjYE

Post a redstone torch next to it or use redstone to remotely connect the torch to the rail. --- www.jamesspiller.net

This. Redstone alone seems to be generally used as a wiring. For instance, if you want to place a switch, and have what the switch effects a few blocks away from the switch, you used redstone to connect them.

Do not forget to place a solid block at the end/beginning of your rail or it wont work. --- don't blame the game the game can't corrupt it's on save
