The paper maps you can make. It lets you sort of chart your way around, and has limited space on it.

The world size fits an entire one of those perfectly. And to help, you even get a free map when you start a new world.

When you start a world, if you look in your inventory you have a map.

On the 360 version, the map encompasses the whole play space.

It means that the current size of the world can be shown in the map item. When you have the map, it is *at first* blank except for where you travelled (like a fog of war), as you travel to new areas, the map fills out. The edges of the map itself (the paper in your hands, when you look at it) are the actual boundaries of this current version of the game.
