Total newb taking on a massive project...

I have decided to build the city of Atlantis! Oh boy, it's gonna kill me. Basically I first have to build a sandbar around where my city will be, then either fill up the water with sand/dirt/whatever, or bail it with a bucket, THEN dig it out again, and then I can build my city. Afterwards I cover the top and sides with glass, and let the water, which I so dutifully removed, flow over the top of my city, after which point I can turn off Peaceful mode and pray the Creepers do not blow my glass ceiling up. Sooo yeah.

Good luck. I'd love to see the finished product.

Make sure the buildings are made mostly of gold (people believe atlantis has buildings made entirly of gold)

I'd say go with a combination of the following:
Smooth stone
Sandstone
Gold and Diamond blocks

As for the ceiling, head into the Nether on Peaceful and grab up some glowstone and evenly space it out on the ceiling so mobs won't spawn up there.

I am currently working on more or less exactly this. Want to know how thats going? Feel free to check out my world. However it was a complete and utter b***h to fill in such a huge area and then excavate it down to bedrock only to have to fill it back in with water after I am finished. Keep in mind this is still in progress (on hold because of pistons) and is not finished. Pics below.

That is what the most current version of it is at. Other pictures in the album show off the progress. I have alot more i havent posted yet. Good luck to you if you try something like this, it will take you A LOT of time to fill in the water and dig everything out.

It's proving difficult indeed. I've managed to fill in about one eighth of my selected space. Fortunately a friend pointed out to me that I can dig up the sand I've used once I have a proper wall in place to keep more water from flowing in, which should cut my resource consumption in half.

My plan was originally to build using common cobblestone, and eventually switch in the more valuable(and much rarer) gold. Once creative mode comes out this should be much easier.

But, until then, question; would it maybe be faster to bail the water out with buckets than to fill it in with sand?

NO DO NOT DO THIS!!!!!!! I tried to build a castle on the water and there were a couple of rooms underground. When i tried to take the water out of a 5X5X5 hole it took me 2 hours. Just use the sand. For an easy way of clearing the sand out of the hole i have a idea. On the bottom two layers place cobblestone then fill up the hole with sand. When you are ready to get rid of the sand get rid of the very bottom piece of cobblestone first, put a torch where that stone was, the break the second piece of cobble stone. The sand will then fall on to the torch and break apart without you having to do anything. This does work with Gravel and not 100% sure if it will work with sand, but it should

be aware of the water phsics in theis game. just breaking the walls won't fill it up, just give you a ring of water falls. also nothing can be attached to glass so you won't be able to place water on the top.

NO do not use buckets. The way the water works in this game would make it impossible to use buckets, and you would have to do each layer of water individually since its a new source block. That combined with the fact that the water is replaced by the 4 adjacent blocks when u remove it, makes it impossible to use buckets. Use sand and drop it down to get rid of the water, then either TNT it out or dig it out. That part is up to you.
