Enchanting. A beginner's guide. (please request sticky)

#13CDEDPosted 3/23/2013 9:17:36 AM
Yet again i have been requested to make a short guide, this time about Enchanting and all its wonderful little nuances.

So what is Enchanting?

Enchanting is a process that uses Experience points (covered later) to give special abilities or powers to weapons, tools and armour. its a very useful process that can drastically improve an items usefulness.

Step one. What do i need?

heres a list of items required to set up a good enchanting room.

5 Diamonds
1 Sugar cane farm
2 glowstone blocks/jackolanterns
1 tree farm.
3 lava source blocks
a bucket

here is the process.
1) make a diamond pickaxe
2) pour water on lava
3) mine 3 obsidian blocks
4) farm sugarcane
5) make paper.
6) make paper into books
7) make an enchanting table ( 3 obsidian, 2 diamond, one book.)
8) harvest wood
9) make planks
10) make 15 bookcases

Step two. How do i make my enchanting room?

you need to follow a specific design.

1) build a 5 by 5 room thats at least 2 high
2) put at least 2 light source blocks (not torches) in the floor.
3) place the enchanting table in the middle of the room.
4) line the walls with bookcases
The below image shows you what you need to achieve
http://media-mcw.cursecdn.com/a/a5/Books_optimal.png

you only need 15 bookcases stacked on top of each other but it doesn't do any harm to have more as long as there is a one block air gap between the table and the bookcases.

now you may be asking "whats with all the bookcases?" its pretty simple really. to allow an enchanting table to receive higher level enchantments it needs bookcases. to get level 30 you need at least 15 bookcases.

now what happens if you don't have enough XP for level 30? easy, put a torch on the floor by the table. torches basically nulify a bookcase's properties. so its a quick, easy and reversible way to reduce enchantment levels.

step three. How do i get XP and what is it?

XP is the little green and yellow flashing orbs that go TING when you pick them up. when you do so it'll fill a horizontal bar below your hunger and health. when the bar is full the number in the middle of your HUD will go up one. thats your XP level.

you get XP from doing certain tasks.

killing mobs. (passive and hostile)
breeding.
mining certain ores (loose ores like coal or redstone)
smelting in a furnace (XP on removal of goods.)
catching fish
mining monster spawners (not recommended)

step four. Enchanting. what can i enchant? and how can i enchant it?

each enchantment has a level. this level is in a roman numeral so remember this key

I = 1
II = 2
III = 3
IV = 4
V =5

the level relates to the effectiveness of the enchant, the higher the level the better it is.

items you can enchant are as follows.

helmet.
chest plate
leggings
boots
sword
bow
pickaxe
axe
shovel

step five. using the enchanting interface

this picture shows the enchanting interface. the top half is without an item and the bottom half is with an item.

http://media-mcw.cursecdn.com/4/49/Enchanting_grid.png

so once you have placed the item you want to enchant in the item slot what do you do?

look at the 3 tiers to the right of the interface. the pink highlight (top row) is your currently selected enchantment, the brown (middle row) is an enchantment you can afford and the dark brown (bottom row) is one you don't have enough XP for.

so how do you choose what enchantments you get? well, you don't. the yellow number to the right of each tier is the XP level cost of that enchant.

enchanting is based on chances each level has a percentage chance to apply each enchantment. the higher the level the more chance to get a good type of enchantment and the higher chance of getting the maximum level.

higher level enchants also have a great chance of applying multiple enchants (up to a max of 4). Thing is though a level 30 might have an increased chance of giving you say an infinity I, flame I, punch II, power V bow but that doesn't mean its guaranteed. you could just as easily get Power III and nothing else.

thats pretty much it in terms of enchanting but i have one last thing to tell you.

Step six. what in the name of Toyota does the text mean?

the text on the enchanting interface is not complete gibberish. its actually written in the standard galactic alphabet from the commander keen series of video games.

when translated the enchantment interfaces reads thus:

The first enchantment translates into "Well Played Internets You Are Good", the second translates into "These Names Will Be Random And Confusing", and the third translates to "Each Spell Costs Experience Levels".

As far as I know you can't get Sharpness V or Efficiency V on the Xbox yet. If there is some way I would like to know how, but pretty sure IV is the current max.

Edit: Did some internet searches and it sounds like it may be possible, but very rare and not with diamond gear? No idea.

this is correct you need an enchanted book and an anvil to get to level V. The bow is the exception

dammit little things like that are so easy to miss with the disparity between PC and 360.

Good job again, I didn't know placing a torch 'deactivated' a book case and allows for lower end enchantments. Very useful
