I'm pretty sure that's what they said at the end of the campaign for Halo 3. How did he live? Better yet, can somebody explain what happened?

If you wait until after the credits of Halo 3 you find out that Chief survived but is floating in the middle of space outside of the Milkay Way.

Oh man, so perfect.

And yeah, Halo 3 has an after credits thing, and it explains where masterchief is and why Arbiter thought he was dead.
