So why can't we understand the Covenent? (Maybe spoilers)

In all the other Halo games the Elites would spout random English words and the Grunts would lose their minds when you killed an Elite near them but in English. How come we can't understand them?

Or is this some kind of Fridge Brilliance to signify that these are not the Covies we are used to and the truce hasn't been broken?

It's not a stretch to assume that they're speaking a different language, this is the Storm Covenant, right? Think of how many vastly differing languages we have on Earth!

because the covenent are more intimidating when they are actually alien. it was part of the design choice in reach, and 343 decided to keep it because it worked.

From a design standpoint, it's to drive the fact home that these are inhuman enemies.

From a lore standpoint, Chief never understood them. Cortana had translation software that she probably had running at all times. If she has fallen far enough, the coding for that program may be too degraded and no longer works.

Why do people even bull**** like this? You know you're lying through your teeth, yet you claim its established canon.

Chief understands them all perfectly. You spend 3/4 of Halo 3 without Cortana, talking to the Arbiter and hearing the grunts/brutes in English.
In case that weren't enough, Admiral Hood, Miranda Keyes, Sgt. Johnson, etc. all understood the Arbiter, the Shipmaster, etc. without any AI or even a helmet. In Keyes and Hood's case, they weren't even wearing armor.

The covenant spoke English before and humans understood them. Now they don't.

and chief use to know how to dual wield, he use to not be able to sprint, he use to not be able to drive wraiths, he use to not be able to wield an energy sword, and his ability to jump has changed in height, and airtime throughout the games

things change, if it makes the game better then they can change it. the covenant not speaking english makes them less of the joke that they were in halo 3.

also how do you know the covenant weren't just speaking english during all those time? just as valid an explanation for why we can't always understand them.

lol i agree its funny when people assume things then they try to puzzle it all together and claim it as cannon. Greatest example is Legend of Zelda...everyone claims there own order of games and how they fit in. Reality is nintendo probably made them through the most basic logic i.e they dont have a real order. But Nintendo recently published a official timeline in one of their books just to shut people up. 100% that official timeline was probably thought of wayyyy after the zelda games were made.

Actually, if you listen carefully, you can hear that Grunts speak English, at least. Heavy alien accent, but it's English.

I managed to make out a Grunt say "HE'S GONNA EAT ME" when he was the last on the field and running. Due to there being no shooting, it was much easier to hear.

I'd like to hear what else they say, if someone can record them.
I miss more easily understood Grunts, to be honest.

yes, just like how there are different weapons in Reach and CE since they are set right after each other. The same covenant are going after them in CE that they did in Reach. So i ask, where is the concussion rifle in CE? where is the DMR in CE? where is the gravity hammer? where is the plasma launcher?
