Why don't people use their mics anymore?

I remember playing Halo 3 and there would ALWAYS be people using their mics and chatting. Either just random conversations or actual team communication. There were occasional times like that in Reach and now, its non-existent. I miss those days :(

Party chat killed it. There's also no more proximity audio, so there may be players on the other team with mics and you'll never know.

People are socially awkward. Also, party chat.

It's increasing in number.

I've also noticed that those of us that have mics are put on the same team and those are generally the players that are more strategic. In turn, gaining more wins because of teamwork.

But it shows who has a mic before the teams are split and if they are in a party chat it has a separate icon.

That's mostly true. It does let you talk to the enemy team, but only in those brief moments before the game goes to look for more players. I've had many conversations with teammates cut short between rounds.

I generally am just too lazy to make sure it's charged before playing.

For you, OP, I will make sure it's charged and use it when I play next.

In the nightmare desert stood a building. Outside someone was diggin' a hole in the ground.
