Okay, maybe it's because I've been out of high school for a while but "thanks, what's your background?" seemed like a weird response to a compliment. I agree that "let me think about it" might as well be a no, but you might still have a chance if she's one of those mixed signal types. See if she'll hang out with you outside of school, like a game of mini-golf or something. Not a movie though, not much room for talking there.
