What are specializations?

I just started multiplayer today, and I'm curious about specializations. What exactly are they and how do I unlock more of them. I believe at this point, all I can be is spartan.

Should cover all your bases. Once you hit level 50, you can choose your first specialization, and you'll unlock your first specialization-specific Tactical Perk once you've mastered the specialization (so basically you'll get your first new perk at level 60).
