It was... different. It was made with a heavy emphasis on co-op play. It was still playable singleplayer, but the point of the game would be missed. To cast high level spells, like Firaga, for example, you'd have two players cast Fire on the same spot at the same time to have the spells combine.

I think the biggest complaint of the game was that you were forced to carry a chalice around. If anyone left the chalice's safe zone, he'd start taking significant damage. I'm pretty sure the only point of the chalice was to force the players to stick together to prevent stressing the camera's ability to effectively track everyone.
