always thought it would've been awesome if they had the whole cast from Super Mario Bros 2 playable, but it looks Peach is still relegated to having to be rescued

The official reason was that they wanted them to be identical to Mario That's why Peach, Wario, and Waluigi were passed over for player characters (since they'd be expected to have unique properties). Though I can't see why putting Daisy in a tracksuit and having her as the yellow player would be an issue.....

Pretty sure that first Goomba you kill in stage 1-1 is female too.

Thing is, Luigi was a clone of Mario in his debut titles.
