Does Mario really need originality?

Yes i does need some sort of originality, but people are asking way too much! If it becomes more orignal, it'll be a spin off and god knows that no one wants that (besides Mario Kart and Mario Party)! Not trying to be a troll here, but i rather have the platforming above anything!

Like the old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Wish Konami would have followed that motto with Castlevania.

Of course it does. However, Mario games need originality in their level design and visual fidelity more-so than its stories. The cry for more complex stories in Mario games utterly confuses me, how people claim SMB2 and SML1&2 are their favorite games almost entirely based off the fact that Bowser and Peach aren't in them. The Galaxy games deliver a tremendous amount of creative and innovative level design that any current-gen platformer best be jealous of, and the NSMB games, despite being relatively dull expenditures through stories experienced countless times, are some of the most fun I've had playing a 4-player co-op game this generation.

I understand that gamers are getting tired of "Save Peach, beat Bowser" but Mario has had that foundation for years, and its what modern audiences have come to expect, and I don't see anything wrong with that.

People aren't asking for crazy changes or anything. Just imagine if they never made SMB2, 3, or World the way that they did, but instead they were all slight expansions to SMB1 like the Lost Levels was. Wouldn't that suck? Wouldn't you rather have the originality those other games had?

I didn't care for SMB2, and yeah of course I would, I love slight alterations in the story and stuff like that. However, Nintendo released 2 great 3D platformers that change up the formula quite a bit this generation (Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2), and everyone seems to ignore them for god knows what reason. When it comes to great storylines, I get a good heaping of that from new IPs like Elder Scrolls, Bioshock, etc.

I praise Nintendo for keeping the 2D platformer alive and making it fun to play with friends, and I trust that in addition to NSMBU they're also working on a new 3D Mario platformer that'll knock our socks off, because they always do.

I find that nintendo does have to walk a fine line in terms how it presents it's games so that there is not too much overlap between their different franchises. Each of the character-oriented games that nintendo produces, whether it is mario, kirby, or wario land, etc are usually defined by it's game mechanics.

2-D Super mario games are all based on the simple platforming that the original game created. That is it's sort of game play identity. A a drastic change mechanically calls for a different type of game altogether. If you want more puzzles, you have the mario vs donkey kong games.
From a game creation standpoint, nintendo has to look at what gives a game with its unique mechanics it's own identity.

We don't know every game that nintendo has in the works, but I'm sure every studio has to communicate so they don't overlap too much in what they offer not only in terms of mechanics, but also graphically. The graphical style of NSMBU is a choice that keeps in mind that you have a game like paper mario coming out which has it's own individual style, then you have Good Feel working on their games, always bringing something interesting to the table visually.

I'm sure there is a lot of market influence on how these games look as well, but you'll also get your graphically experimental games from nintendo, probably through their more niche characters.

Mario 1, Mario USA, Mario3 and Mario World were all unique, with new enemies and level styles despite all feeling like another Mario platformer. Find a less misleading argument.

Balthor I agree. When Konami made Dracula into some douche-nozzle named Mathius Cronqvist I knew they went too far.

Honestly, yes he does. There's a reason everyone is overshadowing him in the 2D platform genre now.

If you want nothing to be changed, then go play the old games and hack new levels in. There's no need to waste a good $50 on a shameless rip off of the same thing that doesn't offer any originality.

Mario 2 you mean. OH RIGHT you're an 'anti SM2' person, instead you feel that the original SM2 (lost levels) is the REAL game.
