What will the difference be between NSMB U and NSMB 2, or are they going to be pretty much the same games but on different consoles?

If you look at NSMB2 and NSMBU you can clearly see the differences.

LOLno. Different artstyle, different level themes, gimmicks, world maps, and different playstyles and so much more.

What's the difference between a sheep and New Super Mario Bros' soundtrack?

I agree that NSMBU is probably going to kick ass compared to NSMB2, but how is "oh look, the backgrounds are different" considered a brand new art style? I mean, really? If you did this with any other game, they're just be considered new assets rather than different art styles. I feel the fans are grasping at straws in this regard. Also, do we have confirmation on the different level themes?

Whoever started using the word "canon" in this context, anyway?

Yeah, the fact that they have different backgrounds shows that it has a different artstyle.

Tell me what NSMB/NSMBW/NSMB2 game has a motherhumping PAINTING as one of the levels.
