Hardest Mario Bros game?

Other than Lost Levels?...

For me Galaxy 2, but that's mostly because I wanted a completed 0 deaths save file. Probably SMB3 then, because, although it's not too bad, it's still Nintendo hard in some respects.

Maybe this game if you count the challenge mode. Took awhile along with some intense frustration to get all Gold ranks.

If it's Lost Levels, it's gotta be the famicom version. But... I've heard Vs. Super Mario Bros is similar yet probably harder.

Did everyone answering Lost Levels not see the "Besides the Lost Levels" part of the original post? Geez.

The answer is Sunshine and it's not even close. Merely beating the game is challenging enough with all those secret FLUDD-less missions, but count in getting the red coins in those stages and then other stages like the infamous "take Yoshi to the toxic river" shine, then add in all those damn blue coins, and Sunshine has quite a lot of hardcore difficulty.

Galaxy 1 and 2's challenging stuff is mostly post-game, while SMB3 is probably the hardest 2D game (again, excluding Lost Levels) but I'd still put it below Sunshine's difficulty overall.

This is the hardest IF playing with four friends. Some levels didn't have multiplayer play in mind when they were designed. Solo however, it's a cake walk. Some of the challenges are pretty tough, but just a few.

In the case that multiplayer NSMBU doesn't count, I'd give it to Sunshine. SMB 1-3, SMW, SM64 and both Galaxies are much easier than Sunshine. There were some seriously frustrating shine gets in that game.

Try level 99 while going for highest possible score. I think my highest is 8999910 in an attempt to get a 9999990 score. ;P
