New Super Mario Bros. U
Should Nintendo keep the NSMB games simple?

With Luigi's Mansion 2 on the rise, as well as the inevitable announcement of a brand new 3D Mario game, I'm ready to finally start playing Mario-series games that change things up with new gameplay, characters, locales, etc. Dark Moon looks like a wonderful mishmash of brand new ideas with atmospheric mansions to explore and interesting characters to interact with. Luigi retains his long-forgotten charisma and cowardly nature, and the game as a whole just looks like they put a ton of detail into it. Every 3D Mario has brought something completely new to the table as well, so I await the announcement of the next big Mario game with open arms. Now, what I'm getting at is this; For the most part, Nintendo are pretty damn experimental with the Mario franchise, but the New Super Mario games don't change much and are constantly criticized. Hell, I used to frequent this board if only to complain about the reused graphics, music (Both of which are inexcusable no matter what, imo), and gameplay, with little new ideas in between each iteration. However, is this really a bad thing? The market for classic gamers is huge these days, and once Mario went 3D, tons of friends and family I had who used to love Mario soon lost interest. "Why does Mario have a water pump? Why does Luigi have a vacuum? Where are the Goombas?" The franchise was so out of its original element during the GameCube era, fans of the originals were left in the dust in favor of a new market that only wanted 3D games. After realizing that Nintendo are still going to keep experimenting and innovating things, I don't really think that it's too bad of Nintendo to keep making the NSMB games, making them simple and easily recognizable. Sometimes it's nice to take a break from the more complex 3D titles with new characters and gameplay, and sit down and play the more traditional NSMB games. I still believe that they could be a LITTLE bit more creative visually, and the reuse of music is blatant rehashing, but I don't mind the rehashed gameplay anymore. Classic Mario will forever be fun to me.
I think they could use some new enemies. Or at least some that we haven't seen in a long time. Super Mario Land 1 & 2 have so many enemies that could use a revival. Still, the main focus of these games is the platforming, not the combat. So that's not a deal-breaker for me. Music could definitely be reused less. It's nice to hear a remix of a track from a previous game every now and then, though.
They can keep it simple, but I'm always down for new enemies and power-ups and such like that. --- Thank you for taking the time to read this sig. This sig loves you.
Being 2D Doesn't mean it has to be the exact same thing each and every time. Go look at Kirby Return to Dreamland and Donkey Kong Country Returns. Same old 2D Playstyle that people are familiar with, yet brand new worlds to explore, baddies to fight and abilities to master in the progress. If New Super Mario Bros were more like those games in invoking nostalgia but feeling new at the same time. It wouldn't get the hate the game currently deserves for all it's rehashing. --- Wanting to become a wolf to end all of my life's problems. The_Shadow_Link posted...Being 2D Doesn't mean it has to be the exact same thing each and every time Lets have a look at Donkey Kong Country for a moment shall we? lets see the SNES Games. You explore the island in Donkey Kong Country to get your banana's back, traveling through the jungles, the caves, ruins and even the icy forests, in 2 you are up against the kremlings to free Donkey Kong, and it feels like that as you do levels based on their ships, a volcano and even an amusement park, beehive and ancient castle. And in 3 you explore the North Kremisphere which have Riverbanks, Stilts, Mills, Waterfalls and Cliffs to traverse across. Each game has you explore across different themed lands each time. Makes you feel like you tackling brave new areas and surviving the various perils each area has. The New Super Mario World themes are always the same that you could sing what they are. Grass, Desert, Ice, Beach, Forest, Mountains, Sky, Fire, Star. EACH TIME. It has been that. It's always those themes, maybe not all of them at once but they haven't deviated from those exact themes at all. The fact that a series of SNES games have more variety is disgraceful enough. But it gets worse when they are re-using gimmicks, enemies and even MUSIC from the past games as well. And yet despite this you claim that it is different each time. Somehow. I do not know how. How about explaining this to me. And I won't listen if your concept of how the levels are different is that they re-arranged the way the level tiles are put together to make it "New". --- Wanting to become a wolf to end all of my life's problems. Simple is a much different matter than innovation. I would rather have Mario games simple than have like a story-heavy plot or something. I just want something a little different from the usual "oh Peach got kidnapped, go save her and venture through 8 tired world themes to rescue her". --- Baby Luigi>All
Generally agree with OP, I love the NSMB series and I would not complain if more games in this series get released in the future but I think they can be a bit more adventurous with them without comprising the elements that make them so much fun to play.
Their gameplay can be simple-just stop using the same bloody worlds and ideas through each game. --- Jumping around, reading Tropes all day. Got video games to play, school sure isn't easy. 3DS FC-5370-0900-3336/Wii-U: NewZen41

The main focus is platforming, but I'd like to see more combat options for our heroes instead of stomping/using power-ups/avoiding. I also strongly agree with a Super Mario Land refresher. The other problem with New Super Mario Bros. games is they keep repeating the main characters and acting as if Super Mario Bros. 2 and the Super Mario Land games never existed. --- Every time I post, Wario gets killed. Luigi is the darling of the Mario twins, but people still think he needs more attention. BabyLuigiOnFire is my sister. |
