So wait, I can't use a Gamepad and a Pro controller for regular local co-op?

I almost went out and bought the Wii U, and then I came across this information.

Is it still the case that the Gamepad player is only for boosting and not for regular 2 player mode?

I am also interested in this. I was about to get the game but this is just incredibly shoddy.

GamePad can be used as a controller in single player. In multiplayer, it is used for boost mode.

To play multiplayer with this game, you will need two more controllers. Wii Remotes, Pro Controllers, or one of each.

Darn, that's not what I was hoping to hear. I was considering 2 Pro controllers already, but considering I have to use the Gamepad for 90% of the things on the Wii U anyways, I decided to save that $50.

Now it's either deal with being a booster for this game, or just trade it in right away for Super Mario 3D land.

Thank you for the response though, I wasn't sure if this weird controller thing had been patched.

Yeah it's pretty dumb, very annoying option. I have 3 wii-motes and the gamepad, so I guess I'm unable to play with 4 people?

Yup. Only 3 character payers and one Boost Mode player for that scenario, unfortunately.

Well at least SM3DW adheres to that by letting GamePad player play as a character (at the expense of no 5 player multiplayer...)

Is this going to be patched at some point? I bought a Wii U and a Pro Controller specifically for co op with my girlfriend. We've had a blast with SM3D World, and I picked up Mario Kart this weekend for us as well, which is also really rad. For my free game, I took NSMBU so we'd have another chunky campaign to co op through, and found myself unable to play with her because of all this nonsense about not being able to use the tablet in multiplayer.

If I'd have known that beforehand, I'd have gone with Pikmin or Zelda HD. I know, I know, I should have done my research. But wait... I have two goddamn Mario games that work perfectly with the tablet and pro controller, and there's no rational reason this shouldn't either, so why the hell would the thought "Gee I wonder if I can play this two player Wii U game with my two Wii U controllers" EVER cross my mind?

You can't use the gamepad because it's locked to boost mode in multiplayer. I know it sucks but that's the reason. I don't know why they wouldn't have just given us the option.
As for not being able to use the pro controller, there's really no reason for that. It wasn't even usable for the game at all at release. It was patched in later but they didn't include multiplayer support in the patch.

I have to admit, the Boost mode is fun. I still don't see why it doesn't have the option to switch modes though, it's got all the buttons needed to be a regular controller.
