imo it's the better then the first game. The first game never really got to me the way it did for a lot of people. I didn't fall in love with the series until Zelda II.
- Link looked much cooler from the side perspective not short and squatty and fat looking. - The combat was more varied. no, it wasn't, hit high then hit low rinse repeat
- The music was better. subjective
- There were cool spells. red candle and magic wand
- The world was bigger. really? even so that just made the game more annoying
- It was harder. I agree with this
- You leveled up.you "level up" in 1 by beating bosses and getting the sword upgrades
Combat - Zelda 2 wins, but at the same time they're both just different as well. The good thing is they were both properly balanced in the combat department, so this also comes down to perspective. In my opinion though, Zelda 2 honestly beats most games in the combat department.
Music - Zelda 1 is no slouch for its time as it has some good tunes (and the classic overworld theme will never leave my head), but I think Zelda 2 definitely wins. Nothing to be ashamed of since Zelda 2 had a damn good soundtrack.
Spells - Can't compare. Zelda 1 has items, Zelda 2 has spells. As you said, Zelda 1 also had the magic wand and ect. Either way, they both handled themselves well, and LttP showed us that you can definitely incorporate the magic system into Zelda 1's style anyway.
World - Zelda 2 is bigger but it doesn't matter. Zelda 1 wins in the overworld department for both freedom and secrets. I liked Zelda 2's world still and it was nice that it was bigger, but Zelda 1 wins easily.
Difficulty - They're both challenging enough but yes, Zelda 2 is harder. Unfortunately, Zelda 2 is a bit more cheap and ancient in some of the reasons for its difficulty. Anyway, Zelda 1 has the second quest which makes it a closer fight, but Zelda 2 is still harder. That said, anyone who thinks Zelda 2 is "way too hard" needs to try the Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden series. Or better yet, Battletoads. Zelda 2 is the hardest in the Zelda series but it comes off as barely average compared to some of those games.
Leveling up - Can't compare again. You get stronger in Zelda 1 as well, just in a different way. This isn't what decides which game is better unless you're a classic RPG junkie.
What I think Zelda 2 more so did is not really improve on Zelda 1 (LttP did that), but show us how Zelda could be different and more like classic RPGs. I think it's good because it gave people who maybe didn't like Zelda's style back then a Zelda they could more enjoy. Zelda 1 and Zelda 2 in a way are the most important games in the entire series, because they sort of fought to decide which direction the series would go in. LttP showed us that Zelda 1 won that battle, but it's interesting to think of how different the series might be today if Zelda 2 came out ahead instead. Different, not necessarily better.
