ColebyPosted 7/23/2012 6:28:58 PM | Sparsley a king of Hyrule will be shown or perhaps only mentioned. Zelda is merely a princess who can't possibly be running an entire kingdom by herself, so it's already bad enough that they rarely show her father, the true leader. But pray, why does she lack a mother? Who is the fare lady who rules by the king's side? The one who presumably raised Zelda as a proper young lady? Would she be Queen Zelda? Is she dead at the start of every game, or what?
I just can't possibly fathom why Nintendo would blatantly ignore the mother of the titular character in every game of the series (and no, Tetra's mother doth not count. Nor do I consider TP Zelda a queen, who in fact lacks both a mother and a father in that game.) --- *Offical Girafarig of the Pokemon Black 2 Board* Palindromic Dual-Headed Ass Giraffe | Oh Yeah!! |

Muljo StphoPosted 7/24/2012 12:47:40 AM(edited) | I've thought about this too but my questions expand out to the whole royal family and nobility in general. Although it's just one of those things that the series just doesn't really get into though since it's rooted so much in the simple classical fantasy elements that are always entirely black and white (never a shade of gray). Okay, I don't know why this would lead to the exclusion of a queen specifically, but the thing is that if they were to start showing Zelda having siblings or cousins or aunts and uncles or some other type of extended family member, it starts to raise questions about the lineage of the family tree and the politics between different branches of the family. A potential source of conflict could be some offshoot of the royal line trying to claim that they are they rightful heir instead of the current ruler. Or they might have to create an actual definitive world map with different branches of the royal family put in charge of different sectors as dukes or governors or something like that. And then they have to start being careful about which section of Hyrule we're in and naming the nobles in charge appropriately instead of just pretending that it's always the king. It's just all sorts of layers (on top of or in replacement of the standard good vs evil motif) that the developers have shown no interest in.
Instead, they're so vague about the royal line that the idea I jokingly made up once about the royal line being an unbroken chain of incest has just as much of a chance of being possible as any other idea we could come up with. (The idea, which is so very very wrong, goes like this: Zelda gives birth to her father's son. The son grows up. Zelda gives birth to her son's daughter. The daughter grows up to be the new Zelda and the son takes over as king. Repeat forever.) --- "This ain't like fieldwork. You never have to notarize a man and kill him in triplicate. Well... Well honestly, that only explains why Zelda is never called a queen in any game, including Twilight Princess where, by all rights, she WAS a queen. --- Shadow Temple... Here is gathered Hyrule's bloody history of greed and hatred... - Shadow Temple Walls |

ZeekfoxPosted 7/27/2012 3:01:21 PM | So? There's never a formal line of succession announced. If it's anything like the one in England, Zelda could have a brother who ends up next in line for the throne. I don't think anything in OoT says she's an only child, and even then, she's young enough in the beginning to end up with a little brother later once Hyrule is saved. --- Formally Thewholeshebang.
