Need serious help with kusari gama demon cutter

I have gotten it to work but I can not reliably replicate it. What is the trick to getting demon cutter to work? Is it just random?

I'm not familiar with the name but if it's the >X grab, yes it's random if it grabs or not. Depends on if the enemy feels like dodging it. Still a lot faster then fighting Alchemists regularly.
