My Roster Topic

DISCLAIMER: I have tried to exclude implausible characters, but this is ultimately my wishlist of characters that I think would work well in Smash. This isn't entirely about what I want, though; it's about characters who are popular, notable, and who could potentially bring something new to the Smash Bros. franchise. Some popular suggestions may not be included. This entire topic is pure speculation. You have been warned.

Before I get into the characters I'd like to see introduced to the series, I need to address the characters we already have.

I see no point in bringing up already-confirmed characters. We all know that Olimar, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man, Mario, Donkey Kong, Fox, Link, Samus, Kirby, Pikachu, Bowser, and Pit are in the game. So we can set all of them aside.

The first order of business is the veterans from Melee and Brawl, and newcomers whose main obstacle is similarity to one or more of the veterans. Basically, my prediction for the roster before my own newcomer speculation is the following list. For characters who I don't think have a 100% chance to come back, I've put the likelihood I think they have to return next to their name. If I don't think a character has any chance to come back, they're not on the list. I will elaborate in the next post.

Ganondorf (95% chance)
Donkey Kong
Diddy Kong
Ice Climbers
Meta Knight
King Dedede
Falco (70% chance)
Wolf (50% chance)
Captain Falcon
Pokemon Trainer (80% chance)
Lucario (85% chance)
Ike (90% chance)
Mr. Game & Watch
Snake (90% chance)
Sonic (90% chance)
Mewtwo (60% chance)

I anticipate virtually all of the veterans from Brawl returning; the only ones who might not make it are Falco, Wolf, Toon Link, and, to a lesser extent, Ike, Sonic, and Snake. Guest fighters not returning for the next installment of a long-running fighting game series is seriously nothing new. I don't see Link, Spawn, or Heihachi anywhere in any Soul Calibur games after Soul Calibur 2, for instance. However, Hideo Kojima probably wouldn't be happy with Snake's removal from the series, and SEGA is currently in a long-term partnership with Nintendo, making Sonic's return especially likely. As for Ike, he may be old news as of this point, but he's one of the most popular Fire Emblem lords ever, and the outcry if he was cut would be enormous. Chrom is so similar to Marth that he's only getting in if Marth gets cut, which, considering that Marth is the original Fire Emblem lord, isn't going to happen. Wolf and Falco aren't that likely to be cut - the only real reason to cut either is to make room for a Star Fox newcomer, which is actually kind of a flimsy reason - but I see them as more likely to be cut than Ike, Sonic, or Snake, simply because of the fact that their moves are very similar to Fox's (nowhere near as bad as the Melee clones, including Falco in Melee, but still noticeable enough for their inclusion to be controversial). To be perfectly honest, the only Brawl veteran who's likely to be cut is Toon Link. But at the same time, Mewtwo is the only Melee character absent from Brawl who's likely to turn up in Smash Bros. U. Lucario isn't likely to be cut because of the high-risk-high-reward niche he occupies with his Aura. That said, he wouldn't be impossible to replace.

Chrom is quite a bit of potential to have a unique moveset. Anyone who says otherwise is absolutely wrong. Btw he is more similar to Ike then Marth. And his sword is only by name the same as Marth's.

I'm still working on this. Give me time.

I think Robin/Avatar's moveset potential is much greater than Chrom's, to be completely honest.

Next up, I need to address the newcomers. This will be organized by series, and my projected likelihood for each character will be mentioned.

For the Mario series, Bowser Jr. and Waluigi are the only ones with any realistic chance of getting in. Of those two, Bowser Jr. is far more likely, due to having appeared in numerous main Mario games (Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, and all of the New Super Mario Bros. games except New Super Mario Bros. 2). Super Mario Sunshine alone gives Bowser Jr. some incredible tools to work with - namely, his Magic Paintbrush and alter-ego Shadow Mario. Waluigi's only appeared in spin-offs, but he was an Assist Trophy in Brawl; that isn't a guarantee that he'd be able to work as a playable character (could you imagine playing as Helirin in a Smash Bros. game? I can't!), but Waluigi's had so many different shticks across his appearances in the sports titles that he would be one of the easier Assist Trophies to promote to playable character status.

For the Donkey Kong series, King K. Rool and Dixie Kong are the best candidates. I would personally prefer to have K. Rool in the game, as he has lots of moveset potential due to the variety of ways he's fought the Kongs in the Donkey Kong Country series, but I think Dixie Kong has a roughly equal chance (she was supposedly planned to be in Brawl, and her Ponytail Twirl could give her an interesting recovery mechanic).

I don't expect any newcomers from the Yoshi series at all.

For the Wario series, the likeliest newcomers are Captain Syrup (Wario's main nemesis other than Mario), Mona (Wario's unofficial right-hand woman at Wario Ware), Waluigi (who's usually seen with Wario anyways, so even though he doesn't appear in any actual Wario games, he might still get lumped into the Wario series anyways - most likely to make room for Bowser Jr. or another Mario newcomer), or Ashley (a necromancer-in-training who has proved to be a massive Ensemble Darkhorse). Of those characters, however, Waluigi's the only one with significant moveset potential, and he's likelier to get included in the Mario series than the Wario series. (Wasn't he considered part of the Mario series in his appearance as an Assist Trophy in Brawl?)

No, Toad is far more likely to remain as Peach's Neutral-B. What would they replace him with? A letter bomb?
