A logical look at roster size

#1SmashBro25Posted 8/11/2013 9:12:56 PM
I have to admit, I'm utterly baffled by people who think that the roster is going to be smaller, the same size, or only slightly bigger than Brawl's, that there will be a liberal amount of cuts, or that 50 characters is "way too much".

The game will definitely have at least 45 characters excluding transformations. It will also most likely have over 50 including transformations.

Let's look at things logically, ok?

1) Sakurai comments like "20 is a perfectly fine roster size" or "35 characters is a good number" are always taken either extremely literally our entirely out of context. Sakurai is using these hypothetical numbers to make points about his process. Obviously, 20 characters is not "enough", because he surpassed that number with the second game in the series, and we are currently going into the fourth entry. Also, the progression of the roster has gone 12>25>35 (12>26>39 including transformations), which is an increase of at least 10 each time. In Brawl's case, it was an even larger increase with the inclusion of 18 newcomers, which is almost as many as the number of unique characters in Melee. Given the infrequent nature of new entries in this series, the creators obviously know that the roster will have to be substantially bigger each time. They've done so twice already.

2) People claim that the development team cannot possibly manage to produce a large roster size. Well, look at their track record so far: 14 new characters in Melee (6 of which were clones) and 18 in Brawl (one of which was a clone). Now, Brawl had many of its resources devoted to creating SSE, and still managed to include a whopping 18 newcomers. This time, the adventure mode is being reduced, freeing up at least some of those resources. Lastly on this point, people forget that Namco is bolstering the team this time. The Brawl development team that managed to include so much now has a huge amount of support. So they can certainly manage to add a good number of new characters and modes, among other things. There is no reason, with a large development team and proven track record, that both quality and quantity in the roster cannot be achieved. Brawl had both, and this game surely can also.

3) Cuts are not some absolutely necessary, mandated thing that needs to happen if they want to include more than five newcomers. The five Melee to Brawl cuts were four complete clones and Mewtwo, who seems poised to return this time. Brawl, meanwhile, has just one clone. The Melee cuts were not simply cut to be replaced, but also because, for the most part, they just didn't belong on the roster. Even if Brawl added, say, 8 characters, I still think those four clones should have and would have been cut- they simply don't add anything and aren't even merit-worthy as characters. Brawl's roster, on the other hand, faces none of these issues. The second FE rep is completely unique, it had two (four) Pokemon newcomers that represent the franchise wonderfully, and even characters one might think as clones at first glance actually play completely uniquely to their counterparts. Simply put, there's just no reason to cut characters now because there is no fat to be trimmed.

Once again, Brawl added 18 characters. I don't expect or even want that many in Smash 4, but it's completely plausible to expect 12-14, which puts the total roster at a bit over 50. I don't think that's an unreasonable at all.

One more addition before it's brought up:

Sakurai mentioned "no one had been cut yet". This does not translate to "there WILL be cuts", but in fact reinforces his desire to keep the Brawl roster intact. Sakurai prepares a design document for each game before it begins development. If he had clear intentions of making significant cuts, he would have done so in his planning. This is not the case here, so he's at least looking at every opportunity to bring the cast back as is.

1. Danger of extrapolation and that trend can't continue forever obviously.
2. They said the amount of work increases faster than linearly so that the same number of newcomers is actually a whole lot more work each time.
3. True, cuts aren't absolutely necessarily, but he already said there would be cuts so I don't see why that's relevant at all.

Direct quote from Sakurai in this article: "I can answer that: no. We don’t have the time to fully recreate every single character who’s been in Smash Bros at this point.”

Nor do I expect him to. He did not say "every character from Super Smash Bros. Brawl." He said, "every single character who's been in Smash Bros." Characters like Dr. Mario, Pichu, and Roy all fulfill this criteria, and I fully expect them not to return.

I agree with your points and that there will be more than brawl but after that it's more or less speculation as to the actual size

Yeah that's entirely true- my number was more of an arbitrary guesstimate just to show that something around there wouldn't be unreasonable.
