The most well known video game characters today

Let's keep it simple.

So I say

#1 Mario

How do we get to the top ten, and what evidence do we use? IS Mario #1? To clarify well known means characters whom are known to even non gamers.

Current Rough Draft:
Stage: Speculation

#1 Mario
#2 Pikachu
#3 Red Bird
#4 Creeper
#5 Steve ^
#6 Sonic ^
#7 Pac Man v

I think I agree with a comment in the old topic that Creeper is more well known than Steve. Steve suffers from the Gordon Freeman effect in which he is never seen on screen in typical gameplay, though Creepers make a dramatic on screen presence, in this overwhelmingly popular game.

Like I said in the last topic, Sonic and Pac-Man aren't as popular as they used to be so they'd probably be around #5 or #6. Mega Man is probably even lower, which makes me sad...

Pichu and such.
Nanocarp and such.

I wonder if Franklin of GTa V already got to top 100

I feel bad for all video game characters except Mario, they are always below him unless we make a most popular of early 80s, which is Pac, 70s, which is Space Invaders, and early 70s which is Pong. There is always a clear winner.

It may be good to look at sales for only the most recent game for a character, as the same person will buy different games.

Then again it takes awhile for everyone who wants one to get a copy, so perhaps looking at last gen, such as the wii and ds for one game would be better, and an older edition of tablet series, ect.

Angry Birds 12 million units
Minecraft 12 million units
Sonic Colors 2,180,000 units
Pokemon Battle Revolution 1,320,000 units
New Super Mario Bros. Wii 936,734 units

Well, New Super Mario Bros alone sold over 20 mil, the Galaxy's over 10 mil, Pac's mobile game sold 30 mil in the US alone, Sonic's mobile game sold over 18 million in US and Europe alone. (sonic 1, of course!) and Sonic Dash for mobile sold 20 million. I'm comparing mobile because of the similar audience.
