Why would Sakurai not want many 3rd party characters in?

How would it hurt the game? Snake and Sonic didn't hurt it, exactly. It actually made me more hyped. Smash Bros. shouldn't just limit itself to Nintendo, it'd be better off as including more 3rd party characters. Really, I can't see them adding just Nintendo characters with each iteration of Smash for every console. Nintendo's library has a limit.

Legal hurdles with licensing prevent 3rd party characters from being added as easily as 1st parties.

Because it really takes away from the "Nintendo All Stars" hook of the series by letting a lot of non-Ninty characters in
(even though they've pretty much ran out of All Stars...)

Not games Sakurai made? Not games Nintendo was involved in? Games made by companies that may have been more willing to get involved in licensing hurdles than Nintendo?

There are a lot of Nintendo characters that (arguably) deserve a spot on the roster, especially those from entire series that aren't repped yet. More 3rd party means less first party, and for a lot of people, that's a bad thing.

They should get involved in licensing hurdles, especially if the game was involved on a Nintendo console. Nintendo should get the original Mega Man for Smash 4 and Pac-Man or a Namco rep. They'll generate more sales. This did not stop Namco from going with the Project X Zone game. That was a licensed mess as well. Hell...it's even coming out here.

Completely and utterly subjective.

As much as I want third parties as well, wanting them does not change the fact that they are not as easy to add as 1st parties. And there is no proof that a 3rd party character attracts more or less sales than a 1st party character.

Prioritizing 1st party vs 3rd party all comes down to subjective preference. There is an opportunity cost either way in terms of characters that could've been added instead.

Those were two games that, because of the legal issues, the developers had less control over their game then they wanted. Superbot couldn't include characters like Crash and had to use characters like Raiden and new Dante. Capcom had to follow Marvel's instructions for their characters to the letter and haven't been able to update their game despite fan demand because Marvel hasn't signed off on a new version.

Simply put: more legal issues from 3rd parties = less control by the devs of their own game. Seeing as Sakurai is a very hands on dev, I don't think he'd like to concede that much to other companies.
