What's the point of canon battles?

The characters are from different games with different universes. How do you even know all of the cast's abilities would even work outside of their universes? If they could even be out of their universes?

My favorite character can beat up your favorite character.

How is this about SSB4?

Surely there's no problem with them putting me in Brawl, right?
It's ****ing satire, damnit. In NGE, Doritos are perishable goods

It's not about this game. It's about the topics about this game, which is something almost always stupid and pointless.

Palutena, Isaac, Ridley, King K. Rool, and Anna for SSB Wii U and SSB 3DS!
SSB is the best series ever made!

Despite the fact that I refuse to comment on such topics, I don't blame people for trying to find ways to entertain/distract themselves during this 2 year gap b/w Smash 4's announcement and the first reveal of actual content.

A big problem with canon battles are the differences in game mechanics. Obviously Ike can slice Sonic in half, but some would argue that Sonic would survive the hit aslong as he's holding one ring.

Another is that game universes act as if they are the only universe. Yes, an ancient prophecy says only Link can defeat Ganon, but whoever wrote that has never heard of Pit, Mario, Samus, or Kirby. Surely a stalwart knight or selfless hero like Pit or Mario would have a good chance of being chosen by the triforce or being able to pull the master sword out of it's pedastal, but the only reason they don't is because they don't exist. (Not that I think Pit would need it with all the divine, deity-slayers he plays with) And what about phazon? Pretty sure there's non of that in the Zeldaverse. One you throw Samus and her phazon in world that never had anything close to it, the game and rules have changed. And then there's Kirby. Last I checked, the only thing stopping him from eating bosses is that it's a game mechanic (witch, as I mentioned, could not possibly apply in a realistic battle). There also the issue of Kirby eating Link. Boom. Master Sword, Symbol of Curage, and stylish green hat successfully copied.

And don't get me started on level-up RPGs.

To measure one fictional character's power against another fictional character's power.

Pointless arguing, since they likely will never meet, ever. Goku and Superman is a big one.

You can't. It's completely speculative. That's what makes it fun. Trying to figure out how one universe translates into another.
