You know what this whole Pacman debate reminds me of?

Remember before SSBB when A LOT of people said Sonic would be in SSBB because he was extremely iconic and there were a lot of signs that it would happen (like Mario / Sonic crossover games etc.)

Yet people denied it would happen....

Now we have stuff like this: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090512193945/pacman/images/a/a3/MarioPacman.jpg

...and Pacman is kind of a huge icon in the gaming...

Yeaaahhhhhh

I love the Tales of series as much as anyone else, but do you REALLY think Nintendo would choose a Tales rep BEFORE one of the biggest icons in gaming ever? You have to realize that Nintendo is trying to create mass appeal, and like it or not, people seeing two big gaming icons clashing head to head (i.e. Mario and Pacman) creates hype.

I'm not saying Pacman is a sure thing, but if Namco gets ANY rep it would most likely be Pacman first and foremost.

Let me know when Pac-Man starts overwhelmingly topping Smash character polls to catch Sakurai's eye...oh wait.

Definitely.

Pacman will undoubtedly generate more sales and general hype than a Tales character just as Sonic did for Brawl.

It's all down to Sakurai, though.

The difference is people actually wanted Sonic. No one really cares about Pac-Man.

Consider this: If it was announced that, say, Tecmo was making Smash, would anyone really think Pac-Man was getting in?

80's and 90's gamers would.

I really don't want pacman in this game since it just seems he'd be really out of place, but it'll probably happen.

In what way?

Because if it's his appearance, then I have no idea why you'd think that. Not only are the majority of Smash characters cartoonish in nature (as Pac-Man is), but we've already got a playable character with a somewhat similar appearance to Pac-Man (Kirby).

You're comparing apple to orange here big time.

Sonic was literally the most wanted character out there by far and was the third-party choice for the majority of people pre-Brawl. That was the reason why he got in.

The biggest issue with Pac-Man is that he's mostly expected but not wanted. Had it not been for the news of Namco Bandai working on the game, Pac-Man would be barely requested to even get in (a year ago it was like this). His support nowadays reeks of "expected but not wanted".

Pac-Man isn't a character that the fans want (Sonic) and he doesn't work as a shock character either (Snake). Many people are just gritting their teeths for him to prepare for his "inevitable" appearance. Frankly, if a third-party character is expected but not wanted, it's a pretty good sign to not add the character.

Sure he's super iconic, but why should Sakurai bother adding him when he could add Mega Man and/or a surprise character instead? Both of these would be a better way to approach third-parties as well (Mega Man might not be as iconic as Pac-Man, but I'd say that being probably the most wanted newcomer is notable. He's still iconic anyway).
