It's probably so that people will focus more on the launch titles.
We'll hear more about Pikmin 3 when we are closer to it's release.

To be fair, they did the same thing with Animal Crossing for the 3DS. A ton of people pre-ordered the 3DS because Nintendo stated that Animal Crossing was going to be a launch title. It's about 3 years overdue now.

I was about to buy a Wii U at launch because Pikmin 3 was announced as a launch title. Now that it doesn't even have a firm release date yet, I'll wait.

You may be thinking of Kid Icarus Uprising. They said that this one would be around at or near the launch of the 3DS. But then it was pushed back to late 2011, and then again to early 2012.


But in the case of both this game and AC, they both ended up so much bigger than expected (AC: New Leaf not effortless like City Folk, as we all thought), thus justifying their extended development time.
