This game without a doubt should have online.

This is 2012, Nintendo, this is a co-operative RTS game that would be PERFECT for online, my brother is moving out of the house in Spring and I won't be able to play co-op with anybody unless there is online, You said in 2006 that "online gaming will never catch on" but guess what? It did, in fact, it did 10 years before you even said that, this could be your chance to shine in the online gaming arena but you're just screwing yourself.

You sound pissed.

You are right though.
Online RTS gaming has been possible for quite some time now.
This game would benefit from it.
But as far as we know right now, it does not have it.
Nintendo could change their mind and still add it in.
But don't hold your breath.

I understand the argument that the Pikmin series has never had online play before but it just seems unfair to people like myself. I don't have anyone that will play Pikmin with me, except maybe my brother. So local 4-player is somewhat useless in my eyes.

Now if they are controlled by the CPU that might change my mind. Although I think I speak for many when I say... I'd prefer to play solo instead of having 3 clueless CPU running around and commanding Pikmin that I could have in my possession.

The game's already delayed though and since it's been in development for ages, perhaps online is being reconsidered?

I agree. However, there is a difference between dumb A.I. and simple A.I.
A simple A.I. is one that is helpful with predictable, logical results (often not affecting resources).
A dumb A.I. is one that fails to be helpful by being unpredictable, illogical, and wastes resources.

A good example of a bad CPU partner is Resident Evil 5 where your CPU partner will waste ammo shooting at EVERYTHING, and wasting valuable LARGE herbs to heal 1HP.

A good example of a good CPU 'partner' is the much beloved Companion Cube in Portal.
It used no resources, and did EXACTLY what you wanted/expected it to do.
I'm not sure if you could even call it an A.I., but it did what you wanted out of an A.I.

I think that Pikmin would much benefit from a simple A.I.
It seems to already have that. If there are multiples of a single resource (such as titles to make a bridge) then your Pikmin will automatically go back and keep bringing it until it is complete. From what we seen in the footage so far, is that the other Captains follow you (like Pikmin) until thrown at a task. (For example) If thrown at planted Pikmin, they will auto-pluck them.

So far they seem useful. I do not think that they will take your Pikmin or get them killed.

Perhaps it should, but I couldn't care less if it does. I would only play versus online. No way I would trust people in co-op.

@Ghost-inZeShell It's funny that you mention RE5. I was actually going to mention Sheva's AI because that was by far one of the worst CPU for real. I wasn't quite sure if that would be too off topic or not. I definitely agree with everything you said though. Plus after looking back at the most recent footage, I can see how the CPUs don't act independently without your command so that's a good sign. I feel much more at ease about teaming up with the CPU now.

At the end of it all, if we do somehow manage to get online play, I'd like for it to be done correctly. Balance is probably the most important factor in this case. Meaning if it can't be implemented into the game properly it's best to just leave it out altogether. Which is probably what will happen. :(

One thing that I'm now wondering is if the CPU will ever command an army worth of Pikmin too? Since 400 amongst the four players seems unrealistic. Or will they just somehow calculate how many the player has, and just not pluck more until a few Pikmin die? lol

I think the game will only support the traditional 100 maximum. (personal expectation)

I think that just like in Pikmin 2, the purpose of multiple Captains is to divid the army for multi-tasking.

I believe that in offline co-op, it will be up to the players to decide how to divid the forces.

(i.e. P1 will take 40 Reds to clear enemies to the north...
P2 takes 10 Rocks to break breakable walls, obstacles, ect...
P3 take 20 Blues and 20 Yellows to build the bridge on the other side of the water, and take out the electric hazards...
P4 takes 10 Albinos to look for buried treasure?... IDK)
Just guessing.

^ I'm with you 100%.

Listening to IGN's Nintendo Voice Chat podcast, I'd always hear them say how they can't wait to see Pikmin 3 on a more powerful console than the Wii because then they could have "hundreds" of pikmin running around at once. It's a perfectly reasonable expectation for people who aren't as obsessed with the series as we are. But every time I heard them say that, I'd just have this feeling like, "Damn, you guys are going to be disappointed when the maximum is still 100". Of course, I want critics to love Pikmin 3, so it was a slightly upsetting thought.

Co-op already gives you a huge advantage, just by having more than one pilot in control. Giving them each a full squad of 100 pikmin would break the game-- at least as we know it. They could always make some changes to the game so that this wouldn't be a problem though, I guess.
