So, my dad's GTA5 (I use it as well, so I'd like to solve this problem) quit working tonight. He said that while online, the game just crashed, and when he reloaded the game, it was stuck on the loading story mode screen. It was stuck there every time he tried. He restored the file database, cleaned the disc, power cycled the PS3, and it's still not working. The game isn't visibly damaged.
Our PS3'd been making weird noises while loading this game a few days prior. Is the system broken, or the game? I can't get to the system to try any other games on it right now, so that's why I ask.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm great at fixing older systems, like the NES, the Genesis/Mega-Drive, Game Boys, but not PS3's... Anything that isn't cartridge-based isn't in my field of knowledge...
Sorry if these questions are stupid, but, again, I don't know how to fix PS3's, only old stuff.

That sucks. It sounds like it could be a system problem. Here's the board for the ps3. Hope you get some good help!

just saying with this one , I am really trying to help ! if the game goes in and you see the disc on start uup screen quickly and you can hear it spinning or if you have the cover off and its spinning w/o hesitation it may just be a little dirty , but , if it's hesitates and stops like you mentioned , I am almost 90%
sure the laser lens is weakening and needs to be replaced , if so you should purchase it already assembled ON "DECK" , it's very easy to replace and you same at least enough money to buy a new game ... the little laser is causes about 80% of the PS3 problems ... REALLY I have replaced 2 on mine and a couple of my friends and all systems a go ! .. it takes about 1/2 hour or there a bouts to replace just be patient and pay close attention to what you have taken apart ...
If the only problem is that it's stuck on the loading screen, sign off PSN. It's a known bug that's plastered all over this forum.
Now, if the game isn't booting, it's the PS3. If the game boots and crashes at the same point every time, it's the disc.

Put another game in and see what happens.
I went to a club last night. They played The twist, I did the twist. They played Jump, I jumped. They played "Come on Eileen"...I got kicked out.
I'm hesitant to suggest this, but try getting a lens cleaning disk and see if that helps. Maybe the lens just needs some light cleaning.
But first, take the disc and hold it up to a light (NOT TOO CLOSE) with the label side to the light. if you see any dots of light coming through the label, then you may have damaged (scraped off) a data sector on the disc. Far too often people spend so much time trying to keep the bottom of the disk from getting scratched they forget that the data on the disk is actually directly on the bottom of the label and all they plastic is meant to protect the data side of the label itself.

If none of the above suggestions work, it may be that the save data is corrupted. If it's possible, try backing up the save data onto a usb stick, deleting the save data, and see if the game can then load up....
