GTA1 & 2 = 2 D universe

GTA3, Vice City & San Andreas = 3D universe

GTA4, The Lost and Damned, The Ballad of Gay Tony, Chinatown Wars & GTA5 = HD universe

Hope th^is helps, GTA5 will in fact be in the same "universe" as GTA4 and it's episodes.

....You are kind of dumb.

Please elaborate

Well, when the TC asked about different universes, I highly doubt he was asking the difference visuals of the game, 2D in standard definition vs 3D in sd and 3D in high def.

When people talk about video game universes, they are usually referring to the events, characters, plot of one game and he was asking whether what holds true for one GTA game, in regards to the characters, the people who die, the plot, time period etc, are still true for the newer game. The fact that you ignored all that and just talked about the games being 2D, 3D, etc. showed (to me) a lack of reading comprehension and made me think "....you're kind of dumb."

He may actually be asking for what you answered and if he is, I stand corrected. But I somehow doubt it.

Also, the fact that he's a "regular" on these boards doesn't change anything. You're all nobodies. None of you know each other.

Yeah, nativengine wasn't simply stating the visual differences about the different eras, that's what they're called.

Little tip for the future, maybe find some information out about the topic before calling someone dumb, as you may make yourself look like a fool, just like on this occasion. This website may help: www.google.com

TC, more info about the universes here

http://gta.wikia.com/Grand_Theft_Auto_Universes

but it's basically a less concise version of what nativengine has already posted.

I really want to know if Tommy Vercetti exists within the San Andreas universe and lets say the GTA IV universe... is it all the same planet?

I guess the way to think of it is kind of like parallel universes - many of the aspects of each is very similar, for example Liberty City exists in GTA 1, GTA III and GTA IV, but they can be of a completely different composition and have differing characters in each.

So using your example, Tommy Vercetti does exist within the same universe that San Andreas is set in (one of the casino heist missions even makes reference to him), but he does not exist in the GTA IV universe. Anything that happens in SD universe does not carry over to the HD universe.

Does that explain it?

Tommy does exist in the San Andreas universe, but not in the GTA IV universe. It's just like native said; the series is split between three different universes. As for the same planet, well, no. Different universes kinda mean a different, if same named, planet, don't ya think?

The problem with this topic is that the thread title refers to timelines, but the OP refers to universes as though they are same thing.

I'm not calling anyone stupid here, but if anyone is, it's the TC. You can't expect accurate responses when the question doesn't make sense in the first place.

Actually no. He's spot on.

GTAIII, VC, SA, VCS LCS are all in the ame universe and connected. They're all part of the trilogy(Considering LCS and VC as expansion) Also because Vice City mention Reagan as president it could even be considered "Our" universe.

GTAIV is in a different universe we know this because While It is Liberty City the composition of the city is insanely different making it its own world.

But that's all academic when it comes down to it.

ROcktar has the answer:

El Burro is referenced as he was also referenced in GTA 1, so it felt appropriate that he should cross “universes” – the “universes” are the worlds interpreted at different definitions, 2d, 3d and high definition, so we felt brands and radio / back ground characters would exist in both, but 3 dimensional characters would not. This is the logic (as far as it could be considered logical) behind it – so no, we don’t believe any GTA3 characters could exist in the GTA4 universe.

Note: Ihaven't played GTA or GTAII so I didn't comment on them.

Did you ever consider that GTA 2's "anywhere city" as you call it is just a fictional city in the same universe as GTA 1 but at a different point in time. Being set in the future doesn't mean it's not the same universe.

Because that's how it was explained to us by Rockstar themselves.
