Why is every game in this series called "Grand Theft Auto"?

Can someone explain the meaning and/or significance behind this game's name to someone who has never played it before?

What is one of the things you do most in the games? Steal cars from pedestrians.

Grand Theft Auto is the name of the crime you are most likely going to be committing most regularly.

Grand theft is just a term referring to an expensive item that has been stolen. When the expensive item is a car it's grand theft auto.

The original game had a lot to do with driving around in stolen cars. Even though it's a large aspect to newer installments to grand theft auto there are a lot of other things to do other than driving around in stolen cars. They've already built up a series, so they're not going to change the name now. Besides; now when someone thinks of grand theft auto they generally picture the game before the felony.

What I'm wondering though is what is a final fantasy? I mean. . . it sounds nice and all, but I've played a few of the games and they've never actually said those words so. . . what's that all about?

From what I remember, Final Fantasy was originally meant to be Square's last game or something along those lines.

Correct. Final Fantasy was going to be Squares last game but it did so well it brought them out of bankruptcy. Now look at them.

From what I found on Wikipedia, that's about right:

In the mid-1980s, Square entered the Japanese video game industry with simple RPGs, racing games, and platformers for Nintendo's Famicom Disk System. In 1987, Square designer Hironobu Sakaguchi chose to create a new fantasy role-playing game for the cartridge-based NES, and drew inspiration from popular fantasy games: Enix's Dragon Quest, Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda, and Origin Systems's Ultima series. Though often attributed to the company allegedly facing bankruptcy, Sakaguchi explained that the game was his personal last-ditch effort in the game industry and that its title, Final Fantasy, stemmed from his feelings at the time; had the game not sold well, he would have quit the business and gone back to university. Despite his explanation, publications have also attributed the name to the company's hopes that the project would solve its financial troubles.
