What I liked most about RF3 was that it had a huge load of different waifus to marry What about now? --- Definitely not an alt account. Don't even think about it.
12 in all. 6 for Male 6 for Female --- MORNING RESCUE! The Official Litwick and Bianca of the BW2 Boards
So we get stuck with a small, pathetic selection thanks to them shoehorning both genders in. Thanks a lot, guys. --- It's not God I hate, it's his annoying little fan club I can't stand!

Think of it this way, the girls who played RF3 didn't get to date ANY guys, and the selection in Tides of Destiny was awful (3 vs 10). At least in RF4 there's an equal number for both genders. Besides, RF4 has sold more in its first week than RF3 did in total and it's probably due to them appealing to a new audience with the gender choice and equal number of bachelors as bachelorettes. Not only is it more fair this way, it's a smart business decision.

So rather than screw over one group, they decided a gimped experience for everyone was the moral high road. Yeah, that makes me feel much better about it. And I wouldn't be so quick to attribute a game's sales solely to one aspect, either. RF3 was a straight upgrade from the others, so it's not too far fetched to assume RF4 could be better in every way as well (Other than the obvious piss poor partner choices.) Not to mention the 3DS has been sorely lacking in legitimately good games. I know I'd jump at the chance to get something like this with the current library out. --- It's not God I hate, it's his annoying little fan club I can't stand!
MalfuntcionJUNCITOM posted... To be honest, I don't particularly care whether you feel better about it. Female RF fans have gotten the short end of the stick up until now for no good reason, and I'm delighted that we're finally getting some recognition. Besides, six choices is a helluva lot, and the revamped character interaction is going to make each one feel deeper than those in RF3. :) MalfuntcionJUNCITOM posted...And I wouldn't be so quick to attribute a game's sales solely to one aspect, either. True, but I also wouldn't discount the impact made by the added choices for female fans. According to Siliconera: "Multiple retailers pointed out that Rune Factory 4 appears to be very popular with women, so that’s mission accomplished for Marvelous AQL." Quoted from this article: http://www.siliconera.com/2012/07/22/taiko-drum-master-3ds-sales-consistent-rune-factory-doing-well/ "Rune Factory 4’s success can be attribute to smart design choices such as the ability to play as both male and female characters, an improved relationship system, and the character archetypes chosen for the game’s bachelors and bachelorettes." Quoted from this article: http://www.siliconera.com/2012/07/25/this-week-in-sales-rune-factory-4-and-digimon-world-neck-in-neck/ Based on that, it's pretty evident that at least some of RF4's success can be directly attributed to it being more inclusive.

To be perfectly honest, I don't particularly care that they've gotten the short end either if it's going to impact the quality, but that's neither here nor there. Regarding the reasoning, there's not being the target demographic, and the fact that it takes a lot of extra time and effort to to basically double the possible partners to try to appease two groups, which they were very clearly not willing to put in. And no, six choices is pretty awful, considering it's half or less than you get in any other game. As for whether or not they'll be "deeper" to a truly relevant degree, that's just speculation one way or the other. I'm sure that did have an impact on the sales, I wasn't arguing that it didn't. But neither of us is in any position to say just how much, especially considering it'll be a good year before anyone outside of Japan even has contact with it. --- It's not God I hate, it's his annoying little fan club I can't stand!

Who says who is and is not the target demographic? It's pretty obvious that the developers are actively courting female players with RF4's addition of a female MC. Even if they haven't been the target up until now, that's obviously changed. Furthermore, this has obviously paid off for them in terms of sales so it's a safe bet to say that they'll continue to treat women as part of their target demographic alongside men. And you're saying that you'd only be satisfied if you got 10 or 11 bachelorettes? There are about the same number of marriageable candidates in total, why not try rolling a FeMC and experiencing some of those? I already know that I'm going to be using one of my save files for Dolce. MalfuntcionJUNCITOM posted...And no, six choices is pretty awful, considering it's half or less than you get in any other game. Ah, but from my perspective that's six more than I got in RF3. Different strokes for different folks. You've got every right to complain about it, of course, I'm just offering my differing opinion. But I don't begrudge you guys getting six candidates when the devs could've used those slots for more men. Louis_Koo posted... But I though girls don't play video games! Then you'd be wrong. ;)

Woah woah woah, you're saying a game where a big component is courting and marrying a woman is geared more towards males? That's absolute crazy talk, I don't know where anyone could possibly get that from. As for whether or not that's who they're marketing towards now is irrelevant, as that has no bearing on the past or my point. Not to mention it's still rather presumptuous to insinuate you can tell what does or does not cause a game to sell and by how much. Final Fantasy 13 sold millions despite being what it was. Sales are not really dictated by any real kind of logic. I'm not bicurious, so I have no interest in dating men. I don't think most people would find that solution acceptable, either. MalfuntcionJUNCITOM posted...And no, six choices is pretty awful, considering it's half or less than you get in any other game. Not that you'd have the right to, you're gaining ground, not having content systematically taken from you. What it comes down to is Neverland took a very ****ty and lazy route with the game, and for some bizarre reason thought it'd be acceptable to offer a watered down experience to everyone. I wouldn't care if they went to the trouble of making 11~ extra male partners, that's perfectly fine. But instead of going with the very reasonable proposition of providing everyone with the same experience, they just put in the same amount of work they always do and tried to make it go twice as far. They shouldn't insist on being so ambitious if they're not willing to put in any effort to do it right. I know I won't be paying for their games if they think it's okay to pull this kind of stunt. Sequels are meant to improve upon the predecessor (or milk the series for all its worth,) not remove content. The ideal probably would have been two versions, but these are the same people that drag their feet for a year just to send it overseas. Can't expect anything complex from slackers. --- It's not God I hate, it's his annoying little fan club I can't stand! |
