I mean okay, so I managed to piece together, from context, that Point is the first character, and Anchor is the third (and I think the mid character is just called Mid?), but what does it all mean? What exactly makes a character good at point vs a good anchor? --- "Not all who wander are lost." http://whitetigershiro.blogspot.com/

Well pretty much every good character is good on point, although some are better than other. Many peoples best character is put on point so that they can have assists to back up their weaknesses and extend combos. So because of this, you would generally want your point character to both do enough damage and build enough bar so that you can kill the opponents point character in one combo.
Not every good character makes a good anchor though. A good anchor should have a universally helpful assist, be able to be self reliant, be able to DHC from most other hypers, and makes good use of XF.
So for example both Wesker and Zero are amazing point characters. However backed up by the correct assists Zero's damage and meter building skyrockets, making Zero the better point character. However his assists are not very good and while he can easily kill a character in XF, he doesn't do so as efficiently as others as his combos are somewhat lengthy.
Wesker on the other hand makes an excellent anchor because he has a great assist (Samurai Edge) and he is so fast and powerful, its not uncommon for him to just steamroll through all 3 characters before XF is even finished. --- PSN: Settai UMvC3 Main Team: Morrigan/Magneto/Dr. Doom
