Honestly, if you want a game where you can just get trashed and play with your buddies, Smash Bros. is definitely the way to go; it suits casual players much better (while having plenty of depth at high levels of play once you ignore Metaknight and Snake), and doesn't require nearly the same level of coordination and execution.

On top of that, at full random max item mode it's a glorious succession of explosions and crazy shenanigans, making it great for fooling around in with buddies.
