Should I bother with the side-quests on a first run through?

Most of them don't really offer anything worthwhile other than XP. Should I just power through the main story and then do them on true vault hunter mode?

You should definitely get as much xp as you can the first time.
The second time you'll want to set a bunch of them aside to scale up after entering 2.5.

If you only do story and dont grind out some xp, you're going to get stranded. The enemies will destroy you in tvhm.

I find that doing all side quests in first playthrough is good because some parts in playthrough 2 can be pretty hectic, so it's nice to have a couple more levels.

I do all quests in playthrough 1 and on second playthrough I mainly just do main quest (for when they increase level cap I can get quest items at max'd level.)

Definitely worth the EXP. Every little bit counts.
