So do we get something for having a BL1 save?

I'm looking at an article about the badass system but I'm still confused. It doesn't say anything about having/needing a BL1 save.

Supposedly we get a set of skins if the game picks up a save from the first game.

That is one skin and one head per playable character (a total of 4 heads and 4 skins).

A few questions:
1) How do we unlock them?
2) Do we know what needs to be achieved on the BL1 save to unlock the skins?
3) Is it possible to just get a save from another GFaqs user and have it detect that?

I ask because I no longer have my BL1 saves and don't want to have to re-install just to get some skins.

Actually, scratch that. Turns out I do have my BL1 saves.
