It's ridiculuously hard.

Play nocturne and say that.

As long as you think of some strategy, no it's not hard at all. Even hard mode is pretty much a breeze if you know what you're doing.

The problem is most new players now a days can't handle a game that doesn't spoon feed them.

This game is one of those games that spoon feeds you.

Persona 4 is an unusual game in that it actually gets easier the further into it you get. Honestly, the first dungeon (and MAYBE the second if you're a slow learner) is the hardest in the game. Because your time spent there is limited to your low SP pool and finite resources to replenish it.

Once the Fox joins you you'll be clearing most dungeons in one run. Especially later in the game. As long as you do the Hermit social link the Fox becomes cheaper and you make more money in random encounters.

All the US SMT branded games are not really hard at all (Nocturne difficulty is so overblown) they are just a little harder than your normal RPG. You really wont have too much trouble with the game once you learn the system (weakness and fusions). That being said they did make the first two dungeons in this game quite hard (the first in particular), but it's turns into your standard RPG difficulty after that.

What causes time to pass in this game? I've spent an hour in the castle and it still says its after school. Should I go back to town and heal everybody?

Time doesn't pass while you're in the TV world.

But if you leave, it'll become evening and you can't go back that day.

No, not unless you've let a lot of days already pass since she entered the TV. You've got more than one day to save her, although for getting all of your S.Links maxed it's best to do each dungeon in a single day, the soonest you can (for example, party member S.Links aren't available until after you rescue the victim). The game should warn you a lot if you're about to let someone in the TV die. IIRC, you have until the end of a bunch of consecutive foggy days to get the victim out.

Time to venture through the dungeons is not as time "limited" as the original Persona 3 version. You do not get tired anymore, and if you max out the Hermit Link (Fox), you can get almost free recover for both SP and HP.
