I don't know. How the 'characters danced around' is precisely how they should handle it IMO. How come the fact that Kanji is incredibly hard to talk to not in this conversation? He basically only truly opened up to the protagonist and a few kids. That's about it.

Plus, using slangs and slurs is probably way more realistic than being overtly blunt about it. Especially for a cool cat type like the Protagonist. I agree with the history of the word and all, but we should remember that we're still talking about a highschool story. As intelligently written and fully realized the characters are, they should ultimately act like the kids they are.

Again, not forgetting that Kanji probably isn't the type to be mistaken in his sexuality by the outside world (considering the game's events are fully understood by only a select few of the game's world) and because of how the story is, I don't think Kanji ever had an issue with being called a homosexual slur. He'd probably beat their face in if they tried. And of course, there's still how the directness of homosexual slurs is not really in the same realm in Japanese culture. A lot of Japanese slur can be indirect in direct meaning. Such as Okama/cross-dresser.

Agreed. Should also be noted that the Japanese beat around the bush with just about everything. In like how they portrayed Kanji... really nice character. Especially the making rabbits part.
