And yes, back then that game was still considered a RPG.
(Crazy times that we live today, when Zelda is considered an adventure game, while Code of Princess is an RPG...)

Super Mario RPG.

At first, I thought the game was way too easy because Mario's numbers were too high for enemies to reduce. Then I got to the Hammer Bros.

It has always been an Action/Adventure puzzle game. It can't be an RPG unless you can customize the character through battle somehow (usually with Experience points).

In addition, most RPGs are reliant on story (it is called a "role-playing game" for a reason) and LoZ doesn't take it's stories all that serious.

The first RPG I remember playing is Secret of Mana on SNES.
