I get that FF7 is the most overrated (which I find hard to believe given that it is s*** on from up high in every conversation ever) game of all time. But let us not pretend that it set the standards on main characters in JRPGs using swords as the primary weapon, jokingly or not.
FScell posted...You wanna use swords in your High Fantasy/Medieval/Whatever setting then go nuts, they're pretty cool as weapons go.
But stop using swords where they make no goddamn sense.
In that case Digital Devil Saga should be the standard for modern JRPGs as when you are in human form conventional weaponry is used. The problem is at least to me human form was somewhat stale and very situational. Probably could be dealt with better in other games.
While I shard this sentiment for most games in a modern setting I'm not necessarily against it in Persona 3 and 4, 4 especially due to lack of resources the party has for material goods realistically compared to SEES and over all campy nature the game as a whole has. So while nonsensical for practicality it matches for tone but would work with no weapons at all (but at the same time going that route angers me much as most fights in the P4 animation did).
